Round Rock has evolved from a modest Central Texas farming community into the second-largest city in the Austin metro — a sprawling suburban hub of nearly 250,000 people that increasingly functions as a self-sufficient city rather than a bedroom community. Named for a large round rock formation in Brushy Creek that marked a historic low-water crossing, Round Rock has become synonymous with two things: Dell Technologies (headquartered here since 1996) and youth sports (the Dell Diamond, home of the Round Rock Express minor league baseball team, anchors a significant sports-tourism economy). The city's appeal starts with its school district. Round Rock ISD consistently ranks among the top districts in Texas, with campuses like Round Rock High School, Stony Point, and Cedar Ridge producing strong academic and athletic outcomes. For families, the combination of quality schools, abundant parks, and relative affordability compared to Austin proper makes Round Rock an easy choice. Retail and dining have caught up with the population growth. IKEA's first Central Texas location sits at the I-35/University Boulevard interchange. The Round Rock Premium Outlets draw shoppers from across the region. And downtown Round Rock — centred on Main Street — has experienced a genuine renaissance, with craft breweries, independent restaurants, and a monthly food truck festival that fills the historic blocks. Housing ranges from sprawling master-planned communities with pools and community centres (Forest Creek, Teravista, Paloma Lake) to older established neighbourhoods closer to downtown with mid-century ranch homes on larger lots. Prices are generally 15-25% below equivalent Austin addresses, though the gap has narrowed as demand increases. The trade-off is commute time. During rush hour, the I-35 corridor between Round Rock and downtown Austin can stretch a 15-mile drive into a 45-minute ordeal. But for remote workers and those who can find employment in the north corridor — and there's plenty of it — Round Rock delivers Texas-sized value.
