About Mueller

Mueller is Austin's most ambitious urban infill project — a 700-acre master-planned community built on the site of the old Robert Mueller Municipal Airport, which closed in 1999 when Austin-Bergstrom International Airport opened to the southeast. What was once a sprawl of runways and hangars has become a walkable, mixed-use neighbourhood that feels like it dropped in from Portland or Northern Europe: tree-lined streets with wide sidewalks, neighbourhood-scaled retail, public art at every turn, and a carefully enforced mix of housing types. The housing stock in Mueller is intentionally diverse. Single-family homes, duplexes, rowhouses, and apartments sit side by side, with deed-restricted affordable units woven throughout. The architecture leans contemporary — flat roofs, metal cladding, large windows — but the scale is human: porches face the street, garages are hidden in alleys, and wide medians down the main boulevards double as linear parks. Mueller's retail core is anchored by the Aldrich Street district, home to an H-E-B (one of Austin's busiest), Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, Torchy's Tacos, and a Thinkery children's museum. The weekly Mueller Farmers' Market draws crowds every Sunday morning, with local produce, baked goods, and a community atmosphere that neighbors treat as a weekly ritual. The neighbourhood's crown jewel is Lake Park, a 30-acre green space with a man-made lake, amphitheatre, and some of the best dog-watching in central Texas. The Southwest Greenway connects Mueller to other East Austin trail networks, making it possible to bike downtown in under 15 minutes via off-street paths. Mueller is zoned to Austin ISD and includes Blanton Elementary, a high-performing campus that draws families from across the city. The neighbourhood's location near I-35 and US-290 provides reasonable access to most parts of Austin, though rush-hour traffic on Airport Boulevard can test your patience.
